Computers make mistakes when calculating standard deviation
The standard deviation calculated by a computer can be completely erroneous. This happens when a program directly uses the basic formula on samples of values between 0 and 1. To avoid this problem, Donald Knuth recommends in his book The Art of Computer Programming the algorithm developed by B.P. Welford.
