A future king survives an assassination attempt in Northumbria

Eardwulf is a king of Northumbria whose first known feat of arms is having escaped an attempted murder. Around 791, the sovereign Æthelred I orders him to be killed, but the condemned man survives the execution. A few years later, in May 796, Eardwulf seizes the throne of Northumbria following the assassination of Æthelred I.
