The word joual comes from the pronunciation of cheval

Joual is a popular Quebec dialect whose name comes directly from the pronunciation of the word cheval. The loss of the mute e initially produced the form ch'val which then underwent regressive assimilation to result in /ʒval/. This specific pronunciation eventually evolved phonetically towards /ʒwal/, thus creating the term joual.
