Sarah Bernhardt lied about her birth certificate

Sarah Bernhardt is a famous actress whose exact date of birth remained uncertain for a long time. In order to prove her French nationality and to obtain the Legion of Honour, she had a retrospective birth certificate drawn up by a court decision on 23 January 1914. This official document, based on her baptismal certificate from Versailles, nevertheless contained multiple errors.
