Ronald Reagan was surprised by the election of Clint Eastwood in 1986

Clint Eastwood was elected mayor of Carmel in California in April 1986 with 72% of the vote. Upon hearing the news, the President of the United States Ronald Reagan called him to tease him about his film Any Which Way But Loose. He was alluding to the actor's simian partner in that feature film, while thinking back to his own comedy Bedtime for Bonzo.
