The Hautes Fagnes peat bogs are natural expanses that formed 7,500 years ago. Their creation dates back to the end of the last ice age thanks to the slow decomposition of plants in a very humid environment. This thickness of peat, which can reach seven meters, long served as fuel for heating for the inhabitants until the middle of the 20th century.
