José Mourinho resigned from Benfica after nine matches

José Mourinho left his position as Benfica coach in December 2000 after managing the team for nine league matches. He had sparked a standoff by demanding a contract extension to test the loyalty of the new president Manuel Vilarinho. Faced with the latter's refusal, he immediately resigned on December 5, 2000.
