La Rinconada is a Peruvian city located between 4750 m and 5300 m of altitude in the Andes mountain range. It houses several tens of thousands of inhabitants and draws the essential part of its economic activity from gold mining. Until the end of the 1990s, this site perched in the Puno region was only a simple camp.
