A French archaeological treasure has been underwater since 1855
The excavations led by Fulgence Fresnel on the site of Babylon starting in 1852 resulted in the discovery of Assyrian tombs and bas-reliefs. The river convoy tasked with transporting these remains to France was attacked by hostile tribes in southern Iraq. The entire collection sank into the river in 1855, preventing these objects from arriving in France.
