Power is acquired by sacrificing pigs on the island of Maewo

Maewo is an island in Vanuatu where society is traditionally matrilineal. To obtain a higher social status, men must proceed to the sacrifice of pigs during ceremonies. This rare functioning in Melanesia is also observed through women who access leadership positions through analogous rituals.
