French cloth production was divided by four

French cloth production collapsed at the end of the sixteenth century. This spectacular fall is explained by the ravages of the wars of religion which devastated the kingdom and destroyed its economy. Between the beginning of the conflict in 1562 and its conclusion by the Edict of Nantes in 1598, the number of silk artisans also went from forty thousand to less than one thousand.
