A French frigate explodes with archaeological treasures
The Magenta is an ironclad frigate of the French Navy launched in Brest in 1861. In October 1875, the ship explodes following an uncontrolled fire in the roadstead of Toulon, while it is transporting archaeological objects from Carthage. Divers managed to save a portion of the Punic and Roman vestiges which joined the Louvre museum.
