The family of Elefthérios Venizélos changed its name after fleeing

The family of Elefthérios Venizélos bore the name Cravvatas in the 18th century. An ancestor had to flee the Peloponnese in 1770 after the Orlov Revolt and the ravaging of the region by Albanian mercenaries. His sons decided to abandon the original surname to adopt that of Venizélos.
