The frantic horse tail race in Rome
The October equus is a Roman ritual sacrifice during which a horse is immolated by a javelin strike on the Campus Martius. Immediately after the slaughter of the animal, its tail is severed and then carried by a running messenger. This rapid race of about one kilometer serves to drip the horse's blood onto the ashes of the hearth of the Regia.
