The Yamato was attacked without air defense

The battleship Yamato was the flagship of the Japanese fleet during Operation Ten-Gō. It set sail on April 6 without any air cover to protect its ships. American squadrons were thus able to circle methodically around the formation while staying out of range of the anti-aircraft guns before launching their 386 planes.
