An assassination attempt on the first day in office

Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich was nearly assassinated the day after his arrival in Poland. Appointed viceroy to appease nationalist tensions, he had settled in Warsaw with his family. The attack failed, but the January Uprising of 1863 forced the tsar to recall him to Saint Petersburg.
