Helen means ship-destroyer according to Aeschylus
Aeschylus is the first to have linked the name of the goddess to the root of the verb to destroy. He thus qualified Helen as the one who destroys ships, men and cities in the second stasimon of his Agamemnon in 458 BC. This etymological interpretation was later taken up by Pierre de Ronsard in one of his Sonnets pour Hélène in 1578.
