Jake Gyllenhaal almost played Spider-Man

Jake Gyllenhaal was contacted to play Spider-Man instead of Tobey Maguire and had already begun his physical preparation. This casting change was considered because the lead actor was suffering from severe back pain. Tobey Maguire eventually agreed to reprise the role for the second film.
