Germaine de Staël rejected the British Prime Minister

Germaine de Staël was a woman of letters who tirelessly rejected numerous renowned suitors for her hand in marriage. Among them were Axel de Fersen, the brother-in-law of King George III, and the British Prime Minister William Pitt. She eventually married in 1786 the Baron de Staël-Holstein, a Swedish ambassador seventeen years her senior who had proposed when she was only thirteen years old.
